Grandma Casady’s House
Hello to all,
Doug Casady here, I am so excited to be building this page on My Bricks and Stones.com. This time of my life was truly a blessing for me and my family. Just the fact of how we all pulled together and built this home for Grandma was something I will always treasure!
In 1975 my Dad came to me and asked me if I could put a brick veneer on my Grandma’s old house. It was falling down, and the walls were so far out of plumb that Grandma had rubber bands wrapped around the knobs on the cabinets to keep them closed!
After a discussion with Dad I suggested that we build her a new home. She had 2 acres of ground and the lot to the North was perfect for the site! We rounded up some people, friends and family members and made a dream come true!
Grandma said that was one of the best years of her life, because we were all their on a regular basis. She was able to enjoy the new house for the next 20 years… it was the first time she had an automatic washing machine and a dryer too!
After we got a final inspection on the new home the inspector told us that we were required to demolish the old house because it was not zoned for a rental. My Grandma piped up and said “no one would live in that house but me!” But anyway we had to tear it down. Kind of a sad day, but better things had taken place!
Sometimes in life the times when you give to others, this is when you create the best memories. I know this project touched me in a big way. I was only 22 years old when we started with the project. Dad used to meet me there after we would get off work from our regular jobs and work till dark. Sometimes we used the lights from my truck to clean-up for the day! Good times indeed! I sure enjoyed working with my Dad!
Thanks for visiting my site. I am so grateful to be able to share these times with others.
Blessings to you,
Doug Casady
